ANNUAL MONITORING VISIT LIFE FLUVIAL PROJECT, Bertiandos and São Pedro de Arcos Lagoons, Portugal, June 2, 2022

This year 2022 the Annual Monitoring Visit of the LIFE Fluvial Project took place on June 2, 2022  in the Protected Landscape of Lagoas de Bertiandos and São Pedro de Arcos.

In this occasion the visit was organized by the Portuguese team of the project LIFE FLUVIAL (LIFE16 NAT/ES/000771), of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Forestry Study Center), in collaboration with the Municipality of Ponte de Lima (CMPL). 

The NEEMO Monitor (European entity that monitors LIFE projects), Itxaso Mora,  participated in the visit  togethjer with  the partners of the LIFE FLUVIAL project, namely INDUROT from the University of Oviedo (project coordinator), IBADER from the University of Santiago de Compostela and the company TRAGSA.

The day started with the reception of the participants and a welcome session by Gonçalo Rodrigues, Town Councillor of Ponte de Lima from: Environment and Green Spaces | Sports, Leisure and Youth | Forests and Biodiversity | Public Works, at the Environmental Interpretation Center of the Bertiandos and São Pedro de Arcos Lagoons.

Later, the LIFE FLUVIAL team, coordinated by Dr. Patricia María Rodríguez-González, researcher at the Center for Forestry Studies, Instituto Superior de Agronomia, led a guided tour of the intervention areas of the LIFE FLUVIAL project, where they discussed the methodologies and results obtained in the conservation and restoration actions of riparian and marshy habitats of community importance, including the habitat 91E0*pt3 (Amials and marshy willows).

The interventions carried out include control and elimination of invasive alien species, and passive and active restoration actions to improve the structure and functionality of habitats in the Estorãos River floodplain.

The day culminated with a bike ride along the Lima River to visit the points where publicity equipment and signage for the LIFE FLUVIAL project have been installed, from the town of Ponte de Lima to the project’s intervention areas.
