On February 9, 2023, a
volunteer day was held organized by the Mariñas-Betanzos Rural Development Association in collaboration with the Habitat Naturalist Group, with the assistance of volunteers from the company Corporación Hijos de Rivera, S.A.
The work carried out took place in the surroundings of the Orto ornithological observatory, within the Encoro de Abegondo-Cecebre Special Protection Zone (ES1110004) of the Natura 2000 Network, and consisted of collecting and removing shoots of the invasive exotic plant Acacia dealbata.
A location was sought that would allow carrying out complementary and continuity actions to the actual work carried out from the LIFE Fluvial project.
The participating volunteers were supported and advised at all times by technical staff from the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve and the Habitat Naturalist Group.
At the end of the day, the volunteers managed to remove a 1 m3 bigbag of plant material from the invasive exotic species Acacia dealbata, acting on a net area of approximately 500 m2.
On the other hand, on February 15, 2023, in the Bribes area (Cambre municipality), with the same entities involved as in the previous case, a new volunteer day was developed for the control of exotic flora in the Area of Special Conservation.
On this second occasion, the work was focused on the removal of the invasive exotic plant Conyza canadensis, which had already been controlled during the project.
At the end of the morning, the volunteer assistant staff managed to remove this plant from an approximate net area of 3,000 m2.
Both actions are part of the aid to Biosphere Reserve Management Bodies of the Consellería de Medio Ambiente, Territorio e Vivenda (Xunta de Galicia), charged to the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union-NextGenerationEU, for the years 2022 and 2023 .
