On 14 May 2021, a volunteer day of the LIFE Fluvial project was organised by the Association for Rural Development Mariñas-Betanzos, with the collaboration of the school “CEIP Sada y sus Contornos” through two of its classes of 6th grade of Primary Education.
The work took place on the beach of O Pedrido (Bergondo), within the Betanzos-Mandeo Special Protection Area (ES1110007) of the Natura 2000 Network, and consisted of collecting plastic waste from the beach and removing the invasive exotic plant Arctotheca calendula.
The schoolchildren were supported and advised at all times by teachers from the centre, technicians from the Biosphere Reserve and personnel specialised in the removal of invasive flora from the company Ribeirán Proxectos Naturais.
Throughout the 3 hours of the day, the schoolchildren removed a total of 30 kg of plastic waste and 120 kg of plant material of the invasive alien species Arctotheca calendula, which was transferred by the company TRAGSA, partner of LIFE Fluvial, to an authorised waste manager.
