On May 14, 2021, a volunteer day of the LIFE Fluvial project was held, organized by the Mariñas-Betanzos Rural Development Association, in which the “CEIP Sada y sus Contornos” school center collaborated through two of his 6th grade classes in Primary Education.
The work carried out took place on the beach of O Pedrido (Bergondo), within the Betanzos-Mandeo Special Protection Area (ES1110007) of Natura 2000 site, and consisted of the collection of plastic waste from the sandy area as well as the removal of the invasive exotic plant Arctotheca calendula.
The schoolchildren were supported and advised at all times by teachers from the center, technicians from the Biosphere Reserve and specialist personnel in the elimination of invasive flora from the company Ribeirán Proxectos Naturais.
Throughout 3 hours the schoolchildren removed a total of 30 kg of plastic waste and 120 kg of plant material of the invasive exotic species Arctotheca calendula, which was transferred by the company TRAGSA, partner from LIFE Fluvial, to an authorized waste manager.
